概要
Quarks and gluons are the fundamental particles behind the strong nuclear force, with an unambiguous meaning in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Because the strong force confines, though, one cannot see a quark or gluon directly in data from colliders. In this talk, I explain how machine learning enables a robust definition of “quarks” and “gluons” from a purely data-driven perspective. When this definition is applied to jet samples from CMS Open Data, we find that quarks and gluons have a relative scaling exponent of 4/9, in agreement with the ratio of their color charges in QCD.
