Overview

Non-evaporable getter (NEG) coating is widely used in modern particle accelerators: colliders (ex.: LHC), Light sources (ESRF, ELETTRA, MAX-IV, Soleil, DLS, etc.), heavy ion machines (ex.: GSI), and many others. In designs of future machines, NEG coating is considered as possible or even as the only solution for meeting challenging vacuum specifications.
Such successful application is a good motivation for further ongoing development of NEG coating to address the following:
   • NEG composition: use of transitional metals (Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb) in various combinations;
   • NEG morphology: dense vs columnar;
   • NEG structure: singe, dual and triple layer;
   • Collecting experimental data: pumping properties, ESD, PSD, SEY and PEY;
   • Data analysis, gas dynamics modelling, data application to a future machine design.
   • NEG activation procedure vs multiple activations and long term performance
      (pumping properties, ESD, PSD, SEY and PEY);
   • NEG coating impact on beam energy spread (RF surface resistance) and new solutions.
The talk will overview the achieved results, lessons and directions of future developments.
