High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, KEK
KEK announces that on September 3, 2026, the Director General Selection Committee of KEK selected Dr. Shoji Asai, the current Director General of KEK, as the candidate for the next Director General. His second term of office will be three years, from April 1, 2027, to March 31, 2030.
The reasons for the Committee’s selection are as follows:
- He is a person who has a noble character, with relevant knowledge and experience, and having abilities to manage its educational and research activities properly and effectively.
- He is a person expected to carry out the medium-term goals and plans.
- He is a person who is expected to promote, with long-term vision and strong leadership, the highly advanced, internationalized, and inter-disciplinary research activities of KEK by getting support from the public.
The Committee’s selection process was as follows:
- From March 2 through May 29, 2026, the Committee solicited open call nominations both in Japan and abroad for the next Director General.
- The Committee conducted interviews with the nominees and proceeded with the selection of the candidate for the next Director General.
- The Committee sought the opinions of the members of the Management Council and the Education and Research Council of KEK regarding the results of its selection process.
- Taking into consideration the opinions received from the members of both Councils, the committee held further deliberations and decided to select Dr. Asai, the current Director General of KEK, as the candidate for the next Director General.
