概要
The current LHCb detector is about to be upgraded starting in 1-month time. This Phase-I Upgrade of LHCb (from 2021 onwards) will employ a full software trigger which will allow, on the one side, to increase significantly the efficiency in hadronic final states and, on the other side, will allow the experiment to function effectively at the higher luminosity of 2x10^33 cm^-2 s^-1. That requires to replace most of the LHCb subdetectors and the entire front-end electronics and DAQ system. It is foreseen that by the end of 2029 the LHCb experiment will have accumulated a data sample of around 50/fb.
Together with the Belle-II experiment at KeK, the LHCb Phase-I upgrade will greatly improve the sensitivity of many flavour studies. Yet, the precision on a relevant group of theoretically clean measurements will still be limited by statistics, and other observables related with highly suppressed processes will be poorly known. Therefore a strong motivation arises to build a LHCb Phase-II Upgrade to fully exploit the flavour potential of HL-LHC.
The proposed LHCb Phase-II Upgrade detector will be installed for the beginning of the LHC RUN 5, scheduled to begin in 2031, and will be capable to operate at luminosities around 2x10^34 cm^-2 s^-1. Important preparatory work can be performed during the LHC Long Shutdown 3 (2024-2026). The Phase-II Upgrade should allow to accumulate a minimum of 300/fb of data, enabling the measurement of many important observables with a precision unattainable elsewhere. This project will extend the capabilities of the HL-HLC to search for physics beyond the SM, specially in, but not limited to, the flavour sector.
In this seminar, the calendar, the physics opportunities, machine considerations, detector challenges and solutions for the LHCb Phase-II Upgrade will be reviewed. It will also be discussed how the LHCb collaboration plans to address the required next steps in terms of detector R&D (accompanied with the appropriate simulation studies).
