概要

The last year has witnessed a spectacular opening of multimessenger astronomy with binary neutron star mergers. Gravitational waves from the binary neutron star merger, GW170817, are detected by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration. They informed us that neutron stars should be moderately compact (say, smaller than 13-14km). A nominal short gamma-ray burst, GRB170817A, were detected by Fermi and INTEGRAL satellites at 2sec after merger. This detection confirmed that binary-neutron-star mergers can drive a kind of short gamma-ray bursts, although this vent was not a typical gamma-ray burst involving an ultrarelativistic jet. An ultraviolet/optical/infrared transient, AT 2017gfo, is observed by a follow-up campaign by many telescopes. This transient was not similar to any other transients those have been discovered and is largely consistent with a predicted marcronova/kilonova, quasithermal radiation powered by the decay of r-process elements synthesized in the material ejected during binary neutron star mergers. Thus, binary-neutron-star mergers are likely to synthesize r-process elements. In this seminar, I will review this event focusing mainly on gravitational waves and the macronova/kilonova.
昨年8月17日、連星中性子星合体からの重力波が検出され、さらに引き続いて多波長の電磁波も検出され、本格的なマルチメッセンジャー天文学が始まった。LIGO-Virgoコラボレーションの発見した重力波イベントGW170817により、中性子星は一定以上コンパクトであること（半径だと13-14km以下程度）が明らかになった。合体2秒後にFermi衛星・INTEGRAL衛星はガンマ線GRB170817Aを検出し、かねてからの予測通り連星中性子星がある種の「ショートガンマ線バースト」を起こせることが確認されたが、一方でこれが超相対論的速度のジェットが引き起こす通常のガンマ線バーストでなかったことも明らかになりつつあり、議論を呼んでいる。それに引き続いて精力的に行われた紫外・可視・赤外の追観測では、既知の現象とは異なる突発増光AT2017gfoが確認された。これは合体の過程で中性子星から放出された物質がr過程元素合成を引き起こし、その崩壊で自身が加熱されることで放射される準熱的なマクロノヴァ/キロノヴァと概ね整合しており、連星中性子星合体で確かにr過程元素が合成されることを強く示唆する。このセミナーでは、重力波とマクロノヴァ/キロノヴァを中心にこのイベントを紹介する。
