概要

On Aug. 17, the LIGO and Virgo collaboration decected the first gravitational-wave event associated with binary neutron star mergers, GW170817. GW170817 put a novel constraint on neutron-star equations of state. Moreover, this merger event is observed not only by gravitational-wave detectors but also by various electromagnetic instruments. The coincident gamma-ray event GRB170817A shows that binary neutron stars can drive short gamma-ray bursts. The UV/optical/IR transient AT 2017gfo suggests that the r-process elements, i.e., heavy nuclei such as the gold and platinum, are synthesized after binary-neutron-star mergers. In this talk, I wil review multi-messenger observations of this spectacular event and its implications to physics.
