Particle physics - at least in the realisation of its largest, most and promising projects - has become a global endeavour. However, global projects require a careful and sometimes tedious alignment of national and multi-national interests, and of the various strategies and roadmaps devised for individual funding agencies, countries, or continents. The International Linear Collider (ILC) is - potentially - such a global project towards which currently all major players in particle physics try to find an attitude.
In this talk, I will introduce the aspects of Europe that are relevant to particle physics in general and to the ILC in particular. I will discuss the European strategy update process and some of the inputs to the process that are expected from European countries. I will also highlight the specific German situation.
