CSR radiation and wake problems in free-electron laser LCLS-II at SLAC

There are two main aspects in which the coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) wakefields manifest itself in accelerators. In synchrotrons, they can drive beam instabilities at large peak currents. In linear accelerators, they can deteriorate the beam properties increasing its energy spread and introducing beam microbunching. It has recently been realized that yet another aspect of CSR radiation requires attention at the design stage in a high-repetition machine such as LCLS-II - a local heating of the vacuum chamber and propagation and absorption of the radiation in superconducting accelerating cavities. In this talk, after a brief introduction of the LCLS-II project, I will focus on this new aspect of the CSR problems in LCLS-II.
