Fast polarization switching between right/left circular and horizontal/vertical linear polarizations

Summary
Fast polarization switching at 10 Hz in the soft X-ray region is available by setting two undulators in a tandem configuration and modulating the electron orbit through the undulators by kicker magnets. The technique is effective in detecting a small difference in the signal intensity between two opposite polarizations, e.g., X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and X-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD). Two APPLE-II type undulators have been installed, which provide not only the circular polarization but also the vertical and horizontal linear polarizations. Moreover, a real-time observation of the molecular orientation is available, by combining polarization switching with the wavelength-dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The magnetic structures of spintronics materials, as well as the mechanism of surface chemical reaction on catalysts, are revealed.
